A Haunting In Venice

Hercule Poirot turns his deductive talents to the mysteries of the supernatural realm when he attends a séance hoping to debunk a renowned psychic medium. Based on the 1969 novel Hallowe'en Party by Agatha Christie, this new case pushes the Poirot whodunnit series into the horror genre in a very impressive fashion.

Featuring a star-studded cast that includes Kenneth Branagh as Poirot, Tina Fay as Ariadne Oliver (an author & long-time acquaintance of Poirot), Emma Laird as Desdemona Holland & Michelle Yeoh as the psychic at the centre of the mystery, Joyce Reynolds. Each of the cast members imbues their characters with distinctive personalities & traits, that at times will have you questioning everybody.

A Haunting In Venice belongs to Branagh though as his immaculate portrayal of the detective is brimming with an air of confidence. Even when he is perhaps beginning to question his own beliefs.

Venturing into new thematic & genre territory with this case A Haunting In Venice gives the Poirot series a breath of fresh air. Brimming with horror tropes such as; ghostly apparitions, creepy masks, unsettling children & jump scares A Haunting In Venice will have your blood pressure rising as you try to unravel the mystery before Hercule.

Clocking in at a brisk 103 minutes A Haunting In Venice could have benefited from a little more time to let the plot twists sink in more. Ultimate the revelations & solution to the mystery feel like they come at a breakneck pace, which hurts the overall impact of the film.

Ultimately though, for a film overflowing with twists, turns & revelations A Haunting In Venice is an eery & chilling film that is also incredibly entertaining. If you love a good mystery you cannot go wrong with Hercule Poirot & A Haunting In Venice.
