Baytek – Taking Over Me EP

Originally published on Mildred

Almost one year after his debut DJ set, young Illawarra producer, Baytek celebrated by launching his Taking Over Me EP on Unknown Records.

The six track EP features a collaboration between Baytek and long-time childhood friend and vocalist Tyne-James Organ. In a somewhat unusual move for electronic EP’s in the music industry, Baytek has produced two very distinct original tracks rather than one. He has then followed the more traditional route bundling the originals with four remixes from other artists.

The first of the originals is a hard bass driven number very much in the vein of recent Australian breakout act, Golden Features and is just screaming out to be played on a big sub heavy club sound system. The second original track is a much more ambient, romantic affair that begs the listener to grab a partner to slow dance with and is clearly designed for radio.

Baytek has then called on other artists to create their interpretations which has resulted in a groovy house track from Pantheon and Colour Castle. Wongo then takes the track in an entirely new direction with a big room electro slant with multiple dynamic changes and progressions throughout the five and a half minutes.

The following remix by Lolo BX initially sounds very much like the original, however just after the minute mark hits - a big Trap influenced breakdown kicks in. Sadly this is only used during the breakdowns and thus comes across as somewhat disjointed, unfortunately making this the weakest of the remixes.

Closing out the EP is an 8 minute epic tech-house remix from Francis Xavier that seemingly disregards all but the vocal elements of the original to create something truly new, unique and addictive.

Overall this is a strong outing for the young producer who has shown a great deal of technical progression over his four EP releases to date and is now developing a rather interesting and deep catalogue of original tracks that could see him breakout in 2015.
