In Hearts Wake – Skydancer

The Byron Bay metalcore outfit certainly cannot be faulted for trying something unique and ambitious with their latest project. The third album was written, recorded and produced simultaneously with their previous release Earthwalker with the idea being that they could explore the dichotomies between masculine and feminine ideals.

The major concern with this approach is the restrictions it placed on the bands ability to evolve and learn from their experiences. They have however produced another very nice body of work, it is just hard to decide whether this should be held to the high standards of what we would expect from a true third album.

Throughout the album the lyrical work is impressive combining the gruff vocals of Jake Taylor with the clean melodic vocals of Kyle Elrich to create a nice contrast and balance. Musically the remaining elements are typical metalcore fare. One track that is essential listening with a chorus that everyone can relate to and will inevitably be stuck in your head is Insomnia.
