My Fair Lady

Heading into the Capitol Theatre with zero prior knowledge of Lerner and Loewe’s My Fair Lady I had relatively middling expectations, although my partner for the evening who is a big fan of the musical was incredibly excited which rubbed off on me slightly. I am pleased to say though my expectations were far exceeded by the 60th Anniversary rendition of My Fair Lady.

This beloved musical tells the tale of a Cockney flower girl named Eliza Doolittle (Anna O’Byrne) whose world is forever changed by the brilliant and somewhat arrogant phoneticist, Professor Henry Higgins (Charles Edwards). The clash of cultures sparks a raft of witty dialogue and wonderful songs.

Anna O’Byrne is sharp and loveable in her role as Eliza which contrasts fabulously with the demanding and quick witted Higgins.

The ensemble cast which supports O’Byrne and Edwards are also flawless vocally and physically with their choreography.

Visually the production is breathtaking with captivating set design and brilliant costumes, each and every dress/gown is unique (except for when, for the sake of comedic effect, they're not).

My one and only criticism of the production would be the placing of the interval, which has the first act feeling slightly too long whilst the second act is almost over before you’ve settled back in to your seat.

This adaptation of the beloved musical is faithful to the originally whilst also injecting plenty of biting wit and humour to keep the audience invested.
