There’s a peculiar magic in theatre - a blend of storytelling, acting, & a dash of mystery. And who better to discuss this than Alex Rathgeber, a Helpmann Award-winning actor, who is set to reprise his role as Giles in Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap at the Merrigong Theatre. In an insightful conversation, Rathgeber shared his journey, the essence of The Mousetrap, & the importance of regional theatre.

The Unending Pursuit of Excellence

Rathgeber's dedication to his craft is palpable. Growing up in Horsham, Victoria, he has spent about 20 years in the performing arts industry. Rathgeber revealed, “You can’t rest on your laurels; you’ve got to keep striving to expand your capabilities.” Despite his extensive experience, he continues to attend coaching sessions & classes to refine his skills. He emphasised the necessity of continuous learning, stating, “You are only ever as good as your last night’s performance.”

The dynamic nature of theatre means Rathgeber is constantly preparing for diverse roles. “You always have to be preparing for that next opportunity & that next show that might be auditioning,” he explained to Pario. This perpetual readiness reflects his commitment to maintaining & enhancing his multifaceted talents in acting, singing, & dancing.

The Mousetrap: A Timeless Classic

Discussing The Mousetrap, Rathgeber exuded enthusiasm, The Mousetrap is a classic whodunit. It’s kind of like the original whodunit in many ways."

The play’s enduring appeal lies in its mystery & the interactive experience it offers the audience. Unlike modern productions, there’s no film adaptation, which means the plot’s secrets remain tantalisingly out of reach. As Rathgeber noted, “People come not knowing who’s done it, & it keeps everybody on the edge of their seat.”

For the upcoming productions, Rathgeber plays Giles Ralston, a character deeply involved in the unfolding mystery at the newly established guest house. The show combines dramatic & comedic elements, along with astute social & political commentary.

“There’s a lot of astute social & political commentary that’s true for 1952 as much as it is in 2024,” Rathgeber pointed out.

Bringing Theatre to Regional Australia

For Rathgeber, touring regional areas holds special significance. Reflecting on his roots, he shared, “I grew up in regional Victoria, so for me, it has particular importance to be able to go & take a big city show & go regional with it.” The current tour of The Mousetrap includes stops in places like Toowoomba, Port Macquarie, Darwin, Hobart, & Wollongong bringing the charm of the English countryside to Australian audiences.

The regional tour not only brings high-quality theatre to areas that might not typically see such productions but also fosters a unique bond among the cast & crew.

“When you’re on tour, you have the opportunity to spend more time together & check out the local restaurants & sights,” Rathgeber explained. This camaraderie enhances the overall experience, both on & off stage.

The Importance of Atmosphere

For theatre lovers & Agatha Christie fans, The Mousetrap offers a delightful blend of mystery, drama, & humour. Rathgeber’s portrayal of Giles, combined with the production’s faithful adherence to Christie’s original vision, ensures an engaging experience.

Rathgeber encourages everyone to experience this classic production, stating, “This really is just a sensational production.”

As Rathgeber & his fellow cast members prepare to bring The Mousetrap to new audiences, there’s a sense of excitement & anticipation. For theatre enthusiasts, this tour represents a unique opportunity to witness a piece of theatrical history brought to life with fresh energy & dedication.
