City & Colour - Live at The Enmore Theatre
After 7 long years, City & Colour (aka Dallas Green) returned to Sydney for a live concert at the fabled Enmore Theatre on February 1, 2023.
Kicking off the show was Dallas' good friend & Alexisonfire bandmate Wade MacNeil with his band Dooms Children. As a warm-up act, Dooms Children work fantastically with their more rock-leaning sound & Wade's ever-charismatic presence at the fore.
The crowd had already filled in quite nicely for Dooms Children. Perhaps with many Alexisonfire fans looking to catch up on Wade's latest project & get a little teaser ahead of the upcoming Alexisonfire show in a few weeks.
However, by the time the main event rolled around the Enmore Theatre was filled to the gills with eager City & Colour fans. As soon as Dallas stepped on stage there was a loud cheer from the crowd & an electric feeling of joy spread through the air.
City & Colour delivered a lengthy 90-100 minute set with a diverse mixture of old faithfuls & newer tracks. From the opener Meant To Be through to Weightless, Comin' Home & the closer Sleeping Sickness Dallas' voice is as strong & emotive as ever.
One song, in particular, will be unforgettable for one young lady in particular as I witnessed a proposal right in front of me during the encore performance of The Girl.
After such a long time between Sydney concerts, the pure joy radiating from Dallas via his body language & vocals was abundantly clear.
On a performance aspect, City & Colour's set was an outstanding blending of emotional folk storytelling sensibilities with a driving rock underpinning. Blending this sound with a spectacular light show made for an audio-visual delight for the senses.
While this concert stands alone as a remarkable & memorable night it's also hard to not have the sense that this was simply an entree for the main course of Alexisonfire at the same venue in a few short weeks.
