Firebite
The vampire genre is one which has been well worn throughout the years. So when a series like Firebite with a unique take on the genre comes to bare it is very hard not to check out.
Firebite, which is streaming on AMC+ from December 16, is an eight episode horror series which gives the vampire genre a really intriguing Indigenous spin. The series follows two Indigenous vampire hunters living in a remote desert opal mining town in outback Australia as they fight against the last remaining hive of vampires in Australia.
As the series progresses we come to learn that vampires arrived in Australia aboard the first fleet in 1788 as a tool to eradicate the Indigenous population. Now after hundreds of years the Indigenous "blood hunters" have driven the vampires into a final stand in 'Opal City'.
Firebite is a thrilling, action packed & gory series with a lot of racial & political subtext to backup the outlandish story. Witnessing the beauty & harsh reality of Coober Pedy/Opal City is something to behold & gives the series a uniquely Australian feel - so much so I am actually now compelled to visit.
Whilst the landscapes or Firebite are visually stunning some of the gore scenes are a little schlocky but they don't detract too much from the series.
This series is certainly worth taking the time to watch at least the first few episodes. Seriously, how can look past Indigenous warriors hunting First Fleet vampires in the Aussie outback!
