Sebastian Stan & Daisy Edgar-Jones in Fresh

These days online dating via apps has become the norm, but as we have seen recently with The Tinder Swindler there are still plenty of risks to be wary off. Whilst The Tinder Swindler dove into the world of money fraud the new Disney+ exclusive film Fresh, starring Sebastian Stan & Daisy Edgar-Jones, has a much more gruesome outcome.

Starting out Fresh feels very much like your typical rom-com when Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones) meets the charming Steve (Sebastian Stan) in a grocery story after yet another horrible first date. The pair begin chatting & joking around in what feels like a "too good to be true moment." Unbeknownst to Noa, Steve is in fact too good to be true, & after spending a short period being wooed by Steve she decides to take a weekend trip away with him. Upon arriving at their destination Steve immediately shows his true face as a cannibalistic killer who harvests female human flesh for rich clientele.

With this sudden twist Fresh shifts drastically from a comedic, joyful rom-com to a tense, horror, thriller.

Given that Fresh is a film about cannibalism & violence against women it could very easily have ventured into the 'torture-porn' realm of filmmaking but Director Mimi Cave does a fantastic job of showing restraint. Taking this route showcases the fact that often imagination is worse than reality.

Fresh doesn't rely on jump scares or gore but rather takes a new & more compelling approach to horror. This film forces the viewer to laugh in moments where it would typically feel uncomfortable, which in turn forces you to reflect on society & your own psyche.

Fresh far exceeded my expectations & is absolutely worth checking out, whether you typically like horror or not.
