Greg Gould

Australian singer-songwriter Greg Gould has been working tirelessly to pursue his passion over the past 10 or so years. Now though, it's time to break out & become a leading force in the industry with his new single, Marching On, from his forthcoming album Strings Attached.

Gould sat down with Pario shortly after the release of Marching On to chat about his musical journey, the inspiration behind the single/album & the immense pride he has representing the LGBTQIA+ community.

Primed for takeoff

For the Australian music community, Gould first planted his flag with his appearance on Australia's Got Talent in 2013 However, as we came to learn through speaking with him his passion for music & performance goes back much further.

"I always say that I started singing before I could talk," recalled Gould. "I've always sung, but I never realised I had a gift until I was in year 2 at school. I brought in one of those 'My First Cassette Recorders' with a microphone attached for show & tell. I had Tina Turner's What's Love Got To Do With It inside & belted it out for the class. Afterwards, my teacher was like 'Wow, you can really sing' & put me in the school assembly."

Up until that moment, Gould simply thought everybody could sing. Not too much longer later his parents set about fostering his talent by enrolling Greg into the Johnny Young Talent School.

"That was great because I was around like-minded kids who all loved to sing, dance & act."

With the support of his parents, Greg would set about "creating my path" to stardom by performing whenever & wherever he could. Be that local shopping centres or bigger events like Carols By Candlelight.

Achieving liftoff

In 2013 the opportunity to participate in Australia's Got Talent saw Greg catapulted into the national limelight. With this newfound fame, Gould would soon find himself presented with opportunities to perform at several LGBTQIA+ events such as the Pride Cup, Sydney Mardi Gras, Hamburg Pride, Darwin Pride & most recently Sydney World Pride.

Speaking about those events Gould was very thankful & proud to be asked to represent his community.

"I never take those events or opportunities for granted," explained Gould. "To be chosen to represent my community is always really special... I pinch myself every day when things like that come my way."

Greg was honoured to recently headline Darwin Pride where the Dave Audé remix of his original song Marching On was chosen as the official anthem for 2023

"The inspiration was to write something about my community & the queer community, but I really wanted it to be something that made a statement... Don't get me wrong, I love campy pride songs, but I wanted to write something that captured the history & spirit of the first Pride march in 1978. People were arrested during the very first Mardi Gras, so I wanted to write something from that perspective & show just how far we've come to be able to celebrate the way that we do with Pride in 2023.

"[Marching On] also recognises that there are still people overseas fighting for their rights. There's still lots of scary stuff happening in the world when it comes to the LGBTQIA+ community... This song sprouts further because it doesn't just speak to my community. There are lots of communities that have been outcast or treated with prejudice & discrimination that have had to fight for themselves."
