Infinity Pool
Brandon Cronenberg's latest sci-fi horror film, Infinity Pool, explores the nature of humanity when faced with zero consequences for our actions.
When struggling writer James Foster (Alexander Skarsgård) & his wife Em (Cleopatra Coleman) venture to La Tolqa, a Mediterranean-esque, holiday destination they hope to relax & rekindle the passion in their lives. However, a chance meeting with an actress (Mia Goth) & her husband (Jalil Lespert) sees the 2 couples forming a friendship which quickly has the holiday descend into unbridled chaos & hedonism.
Following a day of drinking on an isolated beach a tragic accident on the journey back to the resort sees the 2 couples wrapped up in the twisted judicial system of La Tolqa. Here wealthy criminals are able to skirt the law by undergoing a cloning procedure which then has the clone endure the punishment, or so it seems. Upon learning of this system holidaymakers in La Tolqa take full advantage to live out their hedonistic fantasies, which often involve drugs, sex & violence, without any fear of retribution.
Infinity Pool is a brilliant exploration of the morality of mankind & how living a life without consequences perhaps would see everybody turn bad.
Visually Infinity Pool is a classic Cronenberg film with lots of artistic, unsettling cinematography. This is epitomised in the opening moments with a long panning camera shot that slowly rotates as it moves across the landscape. Throughout the film viewers will also be subjected to a plethora of snappy flashes of imagery, which verge on subliminal messaging, all in the hopes of unsettling the viewer.
Potential viewers of this film should also be forewarned that like any Cronenberg film, this is incredibly graphic. Both in regards to the depictions of violence & sex.
Ultimately, Infinity Pool is enjoyable, disturbing & horrifying but sadly a little convoluted & vapid despite the incredible performances by Skarsgård & Goth
