Jet City Sports Club

Chasing a passion as a solo creative comes with many challenges along the road. However, those challenges are exponentially increased when attempting to chase a passion as a member of a group, be that in a band, comedy troupe, acting in theatre/movies or as a professional wrestler. For this very reason, everybody in your creative group must be on the same page & equally dedicated. Luckily for Sydney indie-pop band Jet City Sports Club, all 4 members were exactly that.

Lilla Obradovich, the front-woman for Jet City Sports Club, sat down with Pario this week to chat about chasing individual creative passions, forming the band, creating music together & their latest single, Feeling It All.

Long & Winding Road To Jet City Sports

Winding it all back to the beginning of her creative journey Lilla explained that music was always her dream.

"I always loved singing & even as a little kid the first thing I ever wanted to do with my life was to be a superstar," said Lilla. "My best friend in primary school was going to be my backup dancer & I was going to be a famous singer & I suppose I never really lost that."

Given that this passion was brewing from a young age we wondered how Lilla came to love music so deeply. As Lilla came to inform us, her parents were very creative & especially musically inclined. So basically it all rubbed off on a young Lilla.

"We always had guitars or pianos in the house," recalled Lilla. "We listened to a lot of Bob Dylan, Zimbabwean music & Blondie... So my parents were definitely what pulled me in the direction of music initially."

Although Lilla's parents always pushed her to pursue her creativity & music her path to Jet City Sports Club wasn't as direct as you may assume.

Like any young person, Lilla had a rebellious stage, but for her, this meant placing music on the back burner. However, it wasn't long before her inner passion drew Lilla back to music.

At that point, Lilla began writing music own before eventually crossing paths with Jack O'Conner.

"We met through a mutual friend & Jack told me he was starting a band," explained Lilla. "At the time Jack had someone in mind to sing in the band so I said I could play some chords. Then Jack met Seb at a random party & Seb already knew our drummer Dom from school. So the pieces all fell into place."

During their first practice as a 4-piece, Lilla sang for the other members of the band & immediately became the frontwoman for Jet City Sports Club.

"It's crazy how one small thing can cause your life to go in a different direction completely."

Despite everything seemingly falling into place, Lilla told Pario that there was one crucial factor in the process - a shared vision & drive.

"We all desperately wanted this to be our lives. I think that is the biggest thing you are coming up through the industry," Lilla said confidently. "When you are becoming a band you want everyone to be on the same page when it comes to putting all of your energy & passion into it."

Defining The Jet City Sports Club Sound

As Jet City Sports Club coalesced into a solid unit they then had to define their sound. A process that has also seen the band go through quite the evolutionary process.

From the outset, Jet City Sports Club as a group took inspiration from the likes of Julia Jacklin, Phoebe Bridgers & DMA’s. Most recently though the group has begun to learn more heavily into the pop side of their sound.

As such Lilla now describes the band by saying, "if you put it down to genre we're indie-rock-pop but with Feeling It All we're definitely leaning more towards indie-pop"

This indie-pop direction was such a dramatic shift Lilla & Jack weren't even sure if Feeling It All would even become an official Jet City Sports Club track

"When we first wrote the song it was so poppy, which we thought was so not Jet City," said Lilla very candidly. "So we thought, what if we just sold it to some pop artist? We dreamed of making a million dollars by selling it to some hired pop star but it has become a song that is so close to my heart that I'm definitely glad we didn't sell it."

Forging Ahead As Pop Stars

As Lilla & Jet City Sports club look ahead to 2023 they're eager to explore this indie-pop side of their creativity & performance much much more.

"At the end of the day there is nothing wrong with pop music," said Lilla excitedly. "I just think there is a lot of stigma around it."

Pop music fans should ensure they keep an eye firmly planted on Jet City Sports because they have "lots of exciting stuff coming."

Until then though live audiences will have the opportunity to see Jet City Sports Club at the end of November when they perform Feeling It All live for the first time.

"To be honest, we've never played Feeling It All live as a band yet. So we're very very excited to be able to play it for everybody & see the reaction live," beamed Lilla. "People can expect dancing, fun, good vibes & summery vibes [at our shows]. It's going to be a good time, so if you're around definitely come along."
