Kaylah Thomas

As a creative, there tend to be 2 key points when the creative process is at its most difficult. Firstly, there is the moment when you have to try something new & venture outside of your comfort zone. Then after making that big leap, you have to share the output of that leap with the world, which sees you at your most vulnerable. Rising singer-songwriter Kaylah Thomas has captured both of those moments beautifully in her debut EPs opening single, Try.

Pario sat down with Kaylah recently to discuss these daunting creative moments.

Stepping out of your comfort zone

As mentioned Kaylah's debut single is titled Try & as she explained it tells the story of her creative journey.

"Try is my expression of my journey of learning to grow, figuring stuff out & learning to leave the past behind. It's kind of a promise to myself to become better, to keep trying new things & keep getting out of my comfort zone. But, at the same time, it's also a really light, upbeat song, almost like an anthem that you want to jam to."

While Try will undoubtedly connect with other creatives Kaylah was quick to tell us that she feels it will connect with anybody.

"The overall context & theme of the song is something that everyone struggles with or experiences in their day-to-day life," said Kaylah unwaveringly. "My mindset is that you've got to choose growth over comfort... You have to fail 10 times before you succeed."

To further explore creativity outside of her comfort zone Kaylah enlisted the help of producer Sam Swain. With Sam's encouragement, energy & collaboration during the creative process, Kaylah was able to much more freely open up emotionally.

"Try is the opening track to the EP, so it's probably the lightest track of them all but then we slowly go deeper & deeper," explained Kaylah. "Writing Try first gave me the permission to start being honest with people."

Sharing your vulnerabilities with the world

Now that Kaylah has reached the point of sharing the EP with the world she is again encountering a pinch point in the creative process. Now she has to show her music to the world & expose herself again.

Kaylah said this was the most difficult part of her process.

"I've always struggled actually sharing the songs I write because in my brain I'm always thinking, 'Are they going to overanalyse my lyrics? Are they going to not like my song?' I had all of these insecurities that sometimes you just need to push past the fog and just do it.”

Despite these inner challenges Kaylah knows the only way forward is to share her music.

"Sharing my music is still a challenge but again I'm gonna keep trying to share it because it'll go nowhere if I don't. This is like my first body of work that I've ever released & I think everyone's got to start somewhere. This is my starting point!"
