Lisa Richards
Music can have a profound impact on anybody. For most of us it's simply a matter of timing in order for music to have an emotional resonance. In musician Lisa Richards' case though music was more than that, music saved her life & gave her life a purpose in the darkest of times.
During a recent conversation with Pario about her upcoming eighth studio album Lisa reflected on her journey as she discovered her passion for music saying, "music shepherded me into the world of living."
With Waiting To Fly being Lisa's eighth studio album you would be forgiven for thinking she must have started her journey super young. However, as we came to learn she was actually somewhat of a late bloomer, releasing her first at 30 years old. When asked why she started her music career so late Lisa really opened up to Pario to explain that as a child she struggled with abuse, which then saw her develop a drug addiction before then using music to escape.
"The whole truth is that I didn't have any hopes or dreams as a child, I just wanted to obliterate myself. I didn't think the world was very good place & I didn't want to live in it," recalled Lisa. "The first time I remember wanting to sing was when I was a teenager when I was probably around 13-14. I was drunk, standing on a coffee table, listening to The Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack on a record player & singing along. At that moment I had this little voice in my head say, 'maybe you could sing' & then suddenly had this other voice say, 'don't be stupid, that's for other people, you can't sing.'"
As time went by the voice guiding Lisa towards music grew louder until she eventually moved away from her home town & began "dabbling" in music.
"During that time the voice kept telling me, 'you're never going to be able to make music unless you quit doing drugs'," said Lisa. "Eventually went to rehab at 26 to get clean & sober. In rehab they told me you can have a life beyond your wildest dream & nobody had ever said that to me before. So it has been a slow process of discovery, moving into adulthood & trusting myself enough to let myself do music."
Now as she looks back Lisa views that inner voice as a guardian angel of sorts as it guide her out of her darkest days.
These days Lisa says the voice urging her create music is "even stronger" as she has now given is a safe space to "flourish." Lisa's eighth album, Waiting To Fly, is the product of this rich creative environment as she says it is her most personal album to date & "the essence of Lisa."
