Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One
The Mission: Impossible franchise has been with us since 1996 & yet Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One delivers the franchise’s most thrilling outing to date.
In an eerily timely manner Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One sees Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) choosing to accept a mission built entirely around rogue tech. Fuelled by vengeance Hunt is forced to battle against a series of human foes, all working for a sentient AI. It's this technology-focused story featuring artificial intelligence, media manipulation, cryptocurrency, subterfuge & constant surveillance that makes this film so timely & prescient today.
Despite clocking in at 2 hours & 43 minutes Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One flys by without ever feeling rushed. Each sequence feels earned & not simply just jumping from breathtaking location to breathtaking location for the sake of it.
Each of the new characters introduced in the film are also given time to introduce themselves & develop into fully-fledged members of the story. Hayley Atwell as Grace & Pom Klementieff as Paris, in particular, are standout new additions. Grace evolves into a character Ethan has a clear connection & desire to protect whilst Paris is a menacing villain whose arch takes some very interesting turns.
The action sequences of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One complement the pacing of the film. Some moments are incredibly tense as viewers are thrust into the centre of cat & mouse spy chase. Other moments are epic, explosive & rapid with the cinematography again making viewers feel as though they are in the centre of the action.
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One is a timely, epic tech spy thriller that feels eerily prophetic. Not once during the almost 3-hour film did I feel like the film was dragging. I was consistently engaged & enraptured by the story, performances & action being played out on the screen. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One works great as its own standalone film but we also can't wait for Part Two.
