The Metro Theatre in Sydney, known for its vibrant atmosphere & iconic status, hosted a night of intense wrestling action that thrilled fans from start to finish. Walking up the steps of The Metro is a rite of passage for any entertainment enthusiast in the city, & for wrestling fans, it’s a rare & exhilarating experience. Last Friday night, over 600 fans packed the venue to witness Pro Wrestling Australia (PWA) deliver a spectacular 2.5-hour showcase, culminating in a gripping Royal Rumble-style match.

An Electric Atmosphere

From the moment the doors opened, the atmosphere inside The Metro was nothing short of electric. The venue was filled to capacity, with a raucous crowd loudly cheering their favourites & booing the villains with equal fervour. An energetic crowd can elevate any wrestling show, & PWA’s stellar lineup ensured that fans were on the edge of their seats all night.

Winner Enters King of the Metro Rumble Match: Big Fudge vs. Ricky South

The night kicked off with a thrilling match between Big Fudge & Ricky South, who was accompanied by Backman. Ricky, now one of the most despised figures in PWA, played the arrogant former champion perfectly, contrasting sharply with the beloved Big Fudge. Despite facing a brutal beatdown & an incredibly disrespectful unmasking in the centre of the ring, Big Fudge clawed his way to victory, much to the delight of the packed audience.

PWA Tag Team Title Sydney City Street Fight: Aaron Jake & Bel Pierce vs. The Joker & The Thief

The action continued with a chaotic street fight for the PWA Tag Team Titles. Defending champions Jimmy Townsend & Mick Moretti faced off against the ruthless duo of ‘The Street King’ Aaron Jake & ‘The Illusive’ Bel Pierce

Armed with chairs, tables, & even LEGO pieces, the match was a violent spectacle. Aaron Jake & Bel Pierce ultimately triumphed, with Aaron’s savage nature leading them to victory.

Post-match, Aaron’s self-centred celebration hinted at potential tension between the new champions.

The King of the Metro Rumble Match

The highlight of the evening was the King of the Metro Rumble Match, a classic rumble that maintained a strong pace throughout. The match was a masterclass in storytelling, with PWA skillfully developing new talents, advancing long-running storylines, & setting the stage for future feuds.

One slight downfall of this particular match was in regard to the timing of entrances & elevations. On several occasions, the timing did seem a little off with eliminations occurring mid-way through the entrance of another competitor, meaning that the significance of those moments was somewhat lost.

Significant moments included a shocking betrayal between The Velocities tag team partners, with Jude London eliminating Paris De Silva early on. The ongoing feud between The Backslide Girlz & Third Eye factions also added drama, as did the dissolution of the partnership between Rhys Angel & Lachy McIntyre, triggered by Lachy’s disrespect for the wrestling craft.

Ultimately, the rumble was dominated by the women, with standout performances from Frankie B, Nikki Van Blair, Cherry Stephens, & the eventual winner, Charli Evans. 2024 really is becoming the year of women in PWA with the ladies continuing to prove they belong in the main event scene just as much, if not more so, than the men.

Entering the match early, Charli had to outlast 29 other competitors, facing stiff competition from fan favourites & despised villains alike. In the end, with the help of Ben Braxton, Charli eliminated Sam Osborne & Will Kiedis before outlasting Braxton to become the 2024 King of the Metro.

Looking Ahead

Charli Evans’ victory in the King of the Metro Rumble earned her a championship opportunity of her choosing, & she wasted no time in declaring her intentions. Fans can look forward to seeing her challenge Jessica Troy in the main event of Night 1 of the Colosseum tournament during PWA’s next visit to The Metro in October. As the dust settles from an unforgettable night, anticipation builds for what promises to be another thrilling chapter in PWA’s story.
