Saltburn

Righto kids let’s lay it out like this - If you loved the music of the mid-2000s & the fashion that went hand in hand with it, then Saltburn at least deserves half of your attention. Roll that into a cast that will rival any Tarantino classic of the past, & you may have yourself your new favourite psychological thriller, with the perfect blend of black humour, & some very, very cheeky scenes.

Directed by a talented young lady by the name of Emerald Fennell (who previously directed Promising Young Woman, & according to Google played a doll named Midge in Greta Gerwig’s instant classic Barbie). Starring in no particular order everyone’s most-loved-but-also-most hated Aussie Euphoria star Jacob Elordi, the next hottest ticket in town Barry Keoghan, Gone Girl’s Rosamund Pike, & Drive’s Carey Mulligan. Now you can see I wasn’t using hyperbole when declaring an all-star cast!

Still reading? Well long story short, Elordi plays Felix, the mischievously bratty son of a filthy well-off British family. Felix invites his new bestie from school, Oliver (Barry Keoghan). to his family’s lavish manor in the English countryside, which you guessed it, is named “Saltburn”. What Oliver was thinking would be a harmless summer getaway, soon turns into something far more sinister. Or was it Felix who would think it would be harmless?

What goes on behind those walls & within the grounds of Saltburn will make you feel uneasy in your seat while trying not to laugh at the ridiculousness of the dark turn of events. All the while you’ll still be tapping your feet & bobbing your head to the likes of MGMT & Flo Rida serenading classics of the era.

If a Barry Keoghan performance doesn’t make you feel uneasy, then it’s not Barry Keoghan. The bloke is at his brilliant best yet again here & I cannot get enough of the future star. The final scene may just be my favourite movie scene of 2023.

4 out of 5 “Murders on the dancefloor.”
