If you've seen one wedding rom-com you've seen them all... or have you? Shotgun Wedding starring Jennifer Lopez, Josh Duhamel, Jennifer Coolidge, Cheech Marin & Lenny Kravitz turns the genre on its head.
Before diving into the film we need to just say, it's flabbergasting that Jennifer Lopez is 53 years old!
Set on a remote island in the Philippines Shotgun Wedding introduces us to Darcy (Jennifer Lopez) & Tom (Josh Duhamel) on the eve of the destination tropical wedding. Like many a wedding rom-com before it, this film uses the age-old trope of loveable but conflicting families attempting to come together for their loved ones. These familial clashes begin to expose cracks in the relationship between our loving duo. As a viewer, these interactions also deliver us some laugh-out-loud moments.
However, all of these tropes a suddenly blown up when a ragtag group of pirates invade the idyllic island & take the wedding guests hostage. It's at this moment that Shotgun Wedding transforms into a goofy & charming action-comedy jaunt.
The transition in Shotgun Wedding is jarring but also incredibly entertaining. The film is a totally whacky, funny, entertaining rom-com filled with brutal violence, crazy action scenes, a plethora of explosions & ridiculous gunfights.
Along the way, Tom & Darcy learn there is no such thing as the perfect wedding or perfect marriage via some harsh but hilarious revelations.
Shotgun Wedding is the furthest thing from a deep, poignant film but it is remarkably entertaining & a welcome twist on the wedding rom-com formula.
