The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

After 6 years of waiting, the sequel to The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild has finally hit shelves & is taking the gaming world by storm. The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom picks up after the events of BOTW, as far as we can tell. With nods to previous games in the franchise, we believe that TOTK seems to mainly follow Link’s timeline from The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword since we start off this game in the Sky Islands.

There are 3 separate map areas in TOTK - Sky Islands, Hyrule Kingdom, & The Depths (or as my teenager refers to them, the caverns of doom). With the size of each map, players have vast areas to explore leading to well over 100hrs of gameplay. The direct storyline does appear to be short, much like BOTW, but the real fun of Zelda games has always laid in the side quests.

Even though this game has been marketed as a sequel to BOTW, there are some unanswered things we noticed. These include; no mention of guardians, & we have not been able to find any towers. Keep in mind, this review is an early gameplay one, so we are hopeful that as we continue our journey, we get clarification on the loopholes we’ve stumbled upon.

Many of the mechanics of this game are similar to BOTW with a few new upgrades that may or may not be for everyone. Players will notice that Link has a new feature, allowing players to manipulate & engineer items to complete tasks, very similar to the Sheikah Rune abilities from BOTW. It seems that Nintendo tried to cater to a wider audience, specifically those who enjoy games like Minecraft, so we will note that the engineering side of this game may not be for everyone, especially veterans of the Zelda series.

What we’ve seen so far is another visually stunning game in the Zelda franchise, with a ton of things to explore & adventures to be had. I wouldn’t be surprised if a few patches are on their way, but until then, there are some handy glitches out there if you need some help gathering items or gaining some extra rupees.
