Serial killer dramas have proven to be all the rage in recent times, with Dahmer proving to be a smash hit for Netflix in late 2022. Now Stan, via ITV in the UK, has entered into the space with their series, The Long Shadow, focusing on the Yorkshire Ripper.
What sets The Long Shadow apart from other series of this ilk is the decision to focus not on the killer but on the victims & the bungled investigation that spanned 5 long years. By building the series around the detectives & their investigative methods The Long Shadow quickly becomes a tragic & infuriating viewing experience.
Throughout the 5 year investigation ineptitude, chauvinism, stubbornness & moral pigheadedness all run rampant. A factor that caused the investigation to miss, or straight up ignore, vital clues & ultimately contributed to more murders.
Despite being familiar with the case & story via the Netflix documentary series, The Ripper, this dramatic retelling of the story remained captivating. With an attention to detail & phenomenal performances across the board, The Long Shadow is as close to a must-watch as you get.
As the title implies the UK police will forever live in The Long Shadow this case cast. As will viewers of this deeply moving series, which will hopefully make us as a society less judgmental & more compassionate.
