The Sadness
Zombie movies have been around forever but over the course of the past couple of years films about deadly viruses have taken on even greater meaning. Taiwanese horror film The Sadness uses this very concept to create one of the most brutal, gory & compelling zombie flicks I have seen in quite some time.
Set in modern day Taiwan with the country in the grips of a viral pandemic The Sadness is deeply unnerving. As the 'Alvin Virus' mutates people begin to be transformed into sadistic, bloodthirsty maniacs who are compelled to satiate their inner most desires, regardless of how sick, twisted, depraved or highly illegal/immoral those desires may be.
As the virus sweeps the city like a rolling tide of depravity we follow a young couple as they attempt to navigate the dangerous streets & reunite. During each of their journeys the individuals must avoid violence, sadism, sexual assault & even cannibalism - each of which is depicted in graphic, in your face detail.
Visually The Sadness is an assault on the senses with high impact gore, bloodshed & depravity on display. But what more would you expect from a modern day zombie flick.
The Sadness may be too much for some viewers but for those of us that can stomach a bit of blood & violence with a tongue in cheek attitude this is an incredibly enjoyable twist on the zombie horror genre.
