Anchorman 2 : The Legend Continues
Following on from the hugely successful original, which still hold a firm grasp on a spot in my favourite comedies list, Will Ferrell and company return to further the story of Ron Burgundy. Since I was such a fan of the original I went into this one excited and expected a lot from this film, but came out feeling kind of underwhelmed.
Whilst the film didn’t quiet live up to expectations I am happy to say there were many times where I found myself laughing out loud and eventually left with a smile on my face. This film continued the tradition from the first of leaving the audience with plenty of one-liners to repeat to their friends later and also brought back some of the best parts of the previous film, such as the news crew fight scene, and expanded on them beautifully.
I did however have a few gripes with this iteration of the franchise. Firstly I felt the storyline in this outing had a few low points that were either uninteresting or unnecessary in progressing the main storyline further, the main culprit of this being the shark story arch.
Secondly the Brick Tamland character, whilst very popular and possibly most people’s favourite from the original, was over exposed and exaggerated to the point of eventually becoming annoying rather funny. Whilst I can understand why the writers wanted to make this character a more integral part of the film it seemed forced and almost as though they were simply throwing a lot of material at the viewing in the hope something would stick, the addition of a love interest for Brick was particularly overblown with her even out doing Brick in terms of stupidity.
Overall despite my review sounding particularly negative I would definitely recommend this to fans of the franchise because the parts that it does well it does extremely well. However if you haven’t seen the first film I would suggest starting there before embarking on this one.
