Slumberjack EP Review – Extended Version
Originally published on Mildred
Perth duo Slumberjack recently rose to prominence after being featured on Triple J Unearthed. Following on from this buzz they’ve now released their debut self titled four track EP.
They have clearly put a lot of time and effort into this EP right down to the fine details of pacing throughout. Opening with the R&B infused chill-trap track Body Cry ft. Father Dude, a beautifully romantic soulful release that encourages the listener to pull someone close and dance.
The EP then builds into Horus, which incorporates middle eastern sounds layered upon a heavy driving bass line to create a mesmerising tune, before closing with the two best tracks The Others ft. KLP and Felon.
The Others opens with a calming piano line and lovely vocal performance by KLP before then hitting with an obvious drum and bass influence beat. This track also incorporates a new wave sound reminiscent of Flume, but still uniquely their own due to the twerk, over the top influence.
Felon is the hardest hitting trap anthem on the EP with irregular beats interspersed with calmer sections building towards the big bass twerk drops this track into a category sure to fill dance floors this summer.
For a debut EP the level of polish and quality of production is fantastic and a great first salvo onto the scene, if only there were more of it.
