Bailey Rodrigues

The latest single from Gold Coast rapper Bailey Rodrigues is titled WHO DIS & is perhaps one of the most aptly titled songs for a new artist on the scene. Fusing house music beats with hip-hop flair & an incredibly upbeat summer energy Rodrigues' WHO DIS is arriving at the perfect time.

Chatting with Pario recently Bailey takes us through his short but incredibly promising musical journey so far. We spoke about how Bailey's life goals changed in an instant & the creative process behind his unique style of music.

Who Is Bailey Rodrigues

First & foremost though we need to introduce you to Bailey the human being before diving into Bailey the artist. Outside of the recording studio, Bailey is a fairly typical Aussie guy who loves sports & hanging out with mates. But as we came to learn, there was also something other than the music that was special about him. Before diving head first into the world of hip-hop, Bailey dreamt of becoming a commercial airline pilot, even earning his pilot’s license along the way.

"I love flying & actually have my pilots license," revealed Bailey. "I was going to be a pilot & get my commercial pilot’s license so that I could join the airlines but a split-second moment made me not want to be a pilot anymore."

For Bailey, that split-second moment was a chance backstage meeting with G-Eazy at a Brisbane concert in 2016.

"I met him for about 5 minutes & his whole lifestyle, persona & the effect he had on everyone blew my mind," recalled Bailey. "That moment switched something in me & I knew this was what I wanted to do."

So, despite never pursuing anything musically before that moment Bailey decided to place his pilot aspiration on hold & give this music thing a go. A decision which was made slightly easier by knowing that flying would always be there to come back to, "I can always fly but you only have a short period to make the most of music & I feel like that time is now for sure."

Musical Influences & Finding Your Voice

Obviously, with the G-Eazy encounter leading Bailey down this path he was the first person listed when asked about his earliest musical influences. Over time, however, that list has evolved significantly.

"My influences have definitely changed a lot," explained Bailey. "I wouldn't say G-Eazy is the biggest influence anymore. I love Mac Miller, he's one of my favourite artists & he's so different as well... Drake's last album was also a big influence & then of course Young Franco was another massive massive influence."

Although Bailey draws upon all of these influences he also has a strong desire to find his sound.

"I'm in that weird stage of artistry now where I'm trying to find my own sound & where I like to sit," said Bailey. "I feel like I'm getting there & that I'm in a really good spot now with the rap music & house beats stuff."

Perhaps the most important element of Bailey’s success though has been finding joy in the entire creative process.

"I'm having the most fun making this house rap & that is the most important part,". Said Bailey confidently. "You've got to enjoy what you're doing creatively or you're not going to put out your best work & I really think this is my best work because I enjoy it the most."

Creating WHO DIS

Finding joy in the creative process certainly paid off during the creation of WHO DIS. As Bailey explained to Pario this particular song came together in a single studio day, which was meant to focus on a bunch of other tracks.

Before heading into the studio that day Bailey had written verses for other songs but as soon as he heard the beat for WHO DIS he knew it was the song that he needed to focus on. Then suddenly by the end of the day, the song was finished.

As Bailey went on to explain this style of creativity is actually how he prefers to work.

"The way I work creatively I like to put on beats & just freestyle to them until I find a vibe or say something that clicks. I could go through 10 beats trying to find the one before I put something down on paper."

Bailey hopes that idea of "not forcing anything" comes through to the audience because he simply wants "people to listen to the music & immediately feel that good vibe".

During the interview, Bailey revealed exclusively to Pario that WHO DIS is the first single off an upcoming EP.

"WHO DIS is actually the first single from a 6 song EP coming out in early 2023. The EP will be all this style of house rap & good vibes. So, if you like WHO DIS then you are going to like the EP."
