Bullet Train

Brad Pitt & Bad Bunny in Bullet Train

When you step onboard bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto with Brad Pitt you simply need to strap in for the hyper-violent, action-comedy ride you are about to embark upon. Directed by Davi Leitch (John Wick, Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2 & Nobody) Bullet Train continues his style of wacky out their action which is simply fun to witness but not necessarily revolutionary or award worthy.

Bullet Train sees the viewer embarking on a journey aboard one of Japan's famous bullet trains with Brad Pitt- a bucket hat wearing, nerdy zen, criminal agent with the code name 'Ladybug' as he takes on a "simple snatch & grab job"... or so he thinks. Not too long after boarding the train Ladybug learns that he not the only person on this train with a hidden mission.

The film progress Ladybug encounters one secret assassin after another as they each try to complete their mission & disembark the train. Obviously this the key to the action elements of Bullet Train as each trained killer goes about their mission in their own unique ways.

Portraying each of the assassins is an all-star cast consisting of Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Hiroyuki Sanada, Bad Bunny & Zazie Beetz. Each character is introduced with their own like backstory montage, ala Kill Bill, so you immediately know their modus operandi & what to be aware of tactically. Keen viewers will also spot a few really fun cameos along the way.

Plot wise Bullet Train moves along a rapid clip with little to no substance behind the story other than to serve to move each of the characters along from one action set piece to the next. The comedic elects of Bullet Train were perhaps the biggest unexpected highlight & regularly had me bursting out in laughter.

Overall Bullet Train isn't going to win any awards but that's not to say this is a total waste of time. If you simply want to head into a cinema with a giant bucket of popcorn, some lollies & large soft drink for a joyful night out this one is absolutely the way to go.
