Piper Butcher

One fateful night as an 11-year-old Piper Butcher went out to celebrate her mother's birthday, little could she have known her life was about to change forever.

Before we get to that moment though lets take a moment to introduce you to, the now 17-year-old singer-songwriter, Piper Butcher. Born & raised in Newcastle Piper has been slowly grinding away on the local music scene. Piper has followed the tried & true path of cover gigs at local pubs/clubs, progressing to gigs of original music & has now reached the point of releasing her debut EP titled September. An EP which topped the iTunes Alternative Music Charts upon release.

Now that we know a little bit about who Piper is lets discover where this journey began.

According to Piper music has always "been in the blood stream" as she was singing even as a "tiny tot". Piper's love for singing then evolved when she first picked up a guitar at the age of 10.

"Myself & the guitar are a package deal," beamed Piper. "I don't know what to do with my hands if I don't have a guitar... A lot of people consider themselves singers but I really consider myself a musician because I hold the guitar as high as my voice."

It was not too long later when the fore mentioned fateful night that kickstarted Piper's music career took place. Piper glowed as she told Pario the story of this night.

"It was the 1st of June, my Mum's birthday so I'll never forget it. We went to an open mic night to celebrate Mum's birthday & Harry [Hookey] tried to get my mum up to play the tambourine alongside him but she said no. Instead Mum told Harry that I sing, so as an 11-year-old that was just so embarrassing. Unbeknownst to me at the time though she changed my life forever in that one sentence.

"I got up with Harry & sang a song with his guitar while he played the harmonica. That was my first collaboration & my first proper musical performance... That one fateful night in June a few years ago ignited a fire in me that has not stopped glowing."

Since that night Piper has been grinding away in the hopes of making a name for herself in the world of music. A grind which ultimately paid off with the release of her debut EP, September, when it immediately rocket to the top of the charts.

Looking back on the release of September Piper recalls watching it rising up the charts throughout the day. "It was surreal to sit back & say 'ok people want to listen to my music & support my music.'" As the EP continued to rise Piper said she felt "really grateful because that success was all built on the support of my audience - I literally could not have done that without them."

There was one person though that Piper had a small beef with on that day, "When the EP topped the Alternative Chart it was at number 2 on the All Genre chart. So, I remembered having an instant angst towards Kanye West because he was in that number 1 spot that I wanted so bad!"

Although Piper really wanted that top spot she said, "I never think about what is going to be a radio hit or what is going to chart the most. I really just want to draw on my own feelings & share that with the world. When I draw on those things I'm thinking about connecting with my audience no matter how big or small that is."
