Dave Faint
Art is everywhere, even if we don't comprehend it as such. Just look around & you'll see posters, signage, logos, magazines etc - all of which are art in the form of graphic design. For Sydney-based graphic designer/artist/illustrator Dave Faint, constant immersion in art has been incredibly creatively stimulating. So much so, that he has begun to re-explore his artistic roots by participating in group exhibitions as he builds towards his first solo art show.
Pario recently sat down with Dave to discuss where his passion for art was born & has subsequently evolved into graphic design & back to art.
Unique introduction to art
Growing up in Central Queensland exposure to art was much more limited than Dave experiences today in Sydney. So as Dave explained to Pario, his introduction to art was certainly very unique.
"My Mum was my mentor with art... When I was growing up I would do a lot of live drawing with her. Her friends would come over & we would draw them all nude when I was 3-5 years old," recalled Dave. "We've got these wild photos of us doing these really intricate drawings of my Mum's friends nude on the patio."
Although his initial exposure to art was rather unusual Dave's passion then flourished when he discovered the show, Art Attack. A show which was a much more traditional introduction to the breadth of arts practice.
"That show pushed me a little bit more towards graphic design because it showed me all of the different things that you can do with art. Art isn't just painting. It's all of the different things you can do & different things you can create."
Blending career with passion
Over the years Dave has come to realise that the art that he can now create is something unabashedly his. Dave’s done this by blending his graphic design skills with his artistic passion & core skills.
This has left Dave so invigorated with creativity that he has begun participating in group exhibitions.
For these exhibitions, Dave has blended the core of his arts passion, traditional painting, with his digital graphic design skills to create pieces that are undeniably him.
"The things that I've been doing with the exhibitions recently, are just straight up a reflection of my graphic design," Dave told Pario. "Everything that I've been learning in terms of techniques has been directly for works in graphic design, so now that I've been trying to do a little bit more personal stuff, I've been trying to use those skills & techniques to transform that into a physical art piece."
To achieve this Dave's process is very complex.
"First I draw everything on my iPad so that it's broken into different layers. Then I print those layers out, stack them all up on a piece of glass & paint each frame from front to back on the glass," explained Dave with great joy & excitement in his voice. "For the second piece, I added a few more elements. Firstly I added a lenticular print to the background, which means when you look at it it looks 3D. Then I used augmented reality to connect my animation to the piece. The piece has traditional art in the sense of painting on glass, digital art with the animation & then a blending of both with the lenticular printing”
Overflowing with creativity
Having proven to himself that his artistic vision works Dave is more excited than ever before to continue exploring in this space.
"Creating my own personal work has been really good for me because I get to do whatever I want & can fully let my imagination go crazy... The artwork that just did I was stoked with. It came out exactly how I envisioned it in my head. Although it is heaps of work, it is so worth it... The idea now is to continue to do a few more group shows with other amazing artists in Sydney, because that gives me deadlines to make sure I actually do the work. Then I'll eventually collect all of my art together & do a solo show."
