We've all seen the ridiculous, and dangerous, social media challenges that sweep the internet from time to time, but none have ever been as catastrophic as the one depicted in the new Australian horror film, Talk To Me.
The teenagers in Talk To Me have come across a creepy ceramic-covered embalmed hand that supposedly allows them to communicate with the dead. Rather than simply having a conversation with the deceased though these teens see the potential for fleeting social media fame when they begin allowing themselves to be possessed for 90 seconds at a time. During these possessions their eyes turn black, their faces contort into masks of agony & they spout cryptic messages to those around them.
We quickly learn that the 90-second time limit is of critical importance though. Should a possession last longer than this the teens risk giving the deceased permission to remain indefinitely. Obviously, as a horror film, this limit is soon broken & a tale of grief, depression, psychosis & schizophrenia ensues as the spirits lie & manipulate these children into committing unthinkable violence.
Talk To Me is an incredibly gruesome & intensely disturbing film that uses moments of dumb humour to break through the darkness. Across the majority of the film, the themes of mental health, love & suicide are explored in a new, compelling manner but unfortunately, the wheels begin to fall off towards the close of the film. Despite this Talk To Me is one of the best new takes on horror this year & is certainly worth a watch.
