Sydney singer-songwriter Dylan Wright has finally released of his long-awaited sophomore EP, Times Like These. This new EP sees Dylan reach into the depths of his songwriting, unafraid to explore the hardships that face young adults through his music. This therapeutic EP tackles depression and personal loss, while celebrating the joy of starting a family, and luckily for us Dylan has taken the time to unpack the EP track-by-track exclusively for Pario readers.

Promise - The EP begins with promise. The songs story talks about growing up, exploring and the possibilities we have. For me, I’ve been lucky enough to travel overseas a few times. Get lost in old city streets and museums. Listening and watching the locals go about their daily lives. Life is meant to be a long journey but in reality when have know idea what’s around the corner.  The character in Promise is doing some self exploration and going off to explore the world. The chorus is reassuring friends and family they’ll be back one day but at the moment it’s a time to get lost and explore. I took inspiration from a Jack Johnson called Symbol In My Driveway with waves crashing and an acoustic guitar strumming.

Passing Through - I started writing this song in 2016 when it felt like the world was going through a shift. The air was thick with tension. Now it feels like I can barely see in front of me and it’s hard to breathe with the amount of uncertainty around. Passing Through is about having one shot at this life, though there may be a lot of darkness around, find that light within you and go for it. We’re only so passing through this life so is it so hard to be nice to each other? It’s easy to turn on the tv and switch off our minds from the day but there is so much to see and do in the world and lifetime so we need to explore and love more moments.

Broken Paradise - In 2014 my mum passed away after battling MS and leukaemia. I was 21. I was her carer from when I was 16. Broken Paradise is about many people not knowing what is going on inside our minds and behind closed doors. I had to grow up fairly quick. I’d get abused for parking in a disabled spot only for the peoples faces to drain when they saw me wheeling my mum to the side of the car and helping her in. A lot of the time we don’t know what’s going on in peoples lives, they might be smiling and laughing but that doesn’t mean that everything is perfect in their lives.

All To Myself - This was originally two seperate songs that I merged together when they just didn’t seem to be working. All To Myself is about being in the friend zone but thinking it’s leading to something. Wanting that person all to yourself but they don’t want that commitment/love playing the game - “you always want what you can’t have.”

Life Goes By - In 2017 I was on a trip to Bali, the first morning after we arrived I received a call from my brother telling me our Opa, our grandfather, had passed away overnight. He was the king of our family. He arrived from Holland at the age of 17 and created a loving family. He was caring, funny, loving and he did things his way. His wife, our grandmother, passed away one month later. This song is what I thought he would’ve liked to say in a letter to his wife and loved ones as he left this earth. He’ll be there waiting for her. He’ll teach her how to fly.
