Laura Mac

When Laura Maclachlan & Zac Connely first crossed paths at the Splendour In The Grass music festival little did they know it would be both a life & career altering encounter. Since that day the pair have gone on to form a romantic relationship & form a band known as Laura Mac.

During a recent interview with Pario Laura recounted her & Zac's love story, which was certainly an unusual one.

"We happened to randomly meet at Splendour In The Grass a couple of years ago, then I nearly killed him in a car crash & then we fell in love."

Despite both Laura & Zac being musically inclined in their own rights it wasn't until approximately 6 months later that they thought to combine their talents.

"I've always loved everything that he's ever showed me, but it wasn't until 6 months ago that I said 'maybe we should jam together,'" said Laura before Zac continued. "We kind of just started because it was something to do after we decked out a bus on her parent's property to turn it into a little recording studio & just started writing."

Once they began working together the process flowed effortlessly as Laura & Zac combined their vastly different musical influences. A blending which Zac said has been "cool" to witness coming out in the music. Laura then quickly added, "Everything we write sounds different. Every song is almost a different genre, so it doesn't get boring."

Their debut single, Garage Full Of Dreams, is a perfect example of this blending of styles as it chronicles their journey writing music together. Garage Full Of Dreams started with a simple guitar line written by Zac before Laura added her vocals & then the pair finished off the single.

"It all came together in less than a day," recalled Zac. "It was one of those things that just came super easy."

Diving deeper into the single we asked Laura & Zac how they managed to produce such an upbeat positive song following the tough couple of years the creative industry has been though recently.

"For me I'm pretty sure that I was writing that way because everything was a bit melancholy & I wanted to not feel like that," answered Zac before Laura added, "it was a good distraction."

Looking ahead the first major goal for Laura Mac according to both Laura & Zac is a live show because they have been unable to perform live since forming the band. Ultimately though Zac said, "it would be really cool to one day play at Splendour In The Grass because that is where we met."

Perhaps they'll even get their recording studio/bus on the road for a tour, although Laura seemed more confident in that possibility than Zac during our conversation.

"It needs a bit of work to get it moving but that's the dream," said Laura before Zac quickly chimed in. "I'm going to go out on a limb & say that's definitely not happening, that thing is not moving!"

So far Laura & Zac feel writing music together has only strengthened their relationship. But, as Zac said cheekily that could change once they begin playing live shows, "We were hanging out before we were playing music. Now we are playing music together & still hanging out, so it's been pretty easy. We haven't played any live gigs together yet, so we'll see!"
