Northlane - Obsidian

Australian heavy music fans have been hanging out for Northlane's next album Obsidian for a while now. Despite a few unplanned pandemic delays the album is finally here & it was certainly worth the wait.

The 13 track offering sees the four-piece band deliver their most expansive and dynamic album yet. Across the album the group easily sway between their trademark heavy sound, more techno sounding moments, drum & base dance elements & even a little pop-punk.

Opening with the super heavy single Clarity listeners are immediately greeted with classic Northlane that fans have come to know & love. As the album progresses the techno, electronic & synth elements come to the fore more and more. By the time listeners are in the meat of the album with Abomination they are likely to be hooked & much more accepting of this unique brand of music.

However, if the electronic elements are not your jam there is nothing to fear as the heavy elements make a triumphant return to close out the final third of the record. In particular the tile track, Obsidian, hits in the penultimate slot on the record & delivers the heaviest track of the bunch.

This record is the culmination of Northlane's 12-year career journey. Obsidian may not always connect with heavy rock fans at all points throughout the record but the true artistry cannot be ignored. This is a record that only a band with a clearly defined vision for their sound could create.

Obsidian is likely to be mimicked by others in the genre for decades to come, so be sure to listen to the trailblazers & appreciate their efforts.
