Lindsay McDougall
Wollongong locals may have heard Lindsay McDougall on the radio during his afternoon ABC show. Most people though would know Lindsay from his time as part of the iconic 90s band Frenzal Rhomb. In October both of Lindsay's worlds collide when he takes on MC duties at the Spring Loaded Music Festival, where he will also be performing with Frenzal Rhomb for the first time in over a year.
The lineup for Spring Loaded is tailored towards 90s alt-rock nostalgia with the likes of Frenzal Rhomb, Grinspoon, Regurgitator, Caligula, Custard & Jebediah all on the bill.
"Spring Loaded kind of reminds me of Homebake & Big Day Out. It's just a bunch of Australian bands who all know each other, just playing & hanging out," explained Lindsay. "It's all ridiculously familiar but then again none of us have done this for over a year. So it's going to be like taking cautious first steps into a relationship, but we'll soon be pashing each other on the mouth again."
Looking ahead to the festival & the performance aspect Lindsay's excitement was palpable.
"I can't wait to have really loud drums on 1 side of me & a really loud monitor wedged below me. I'll probably trip over that monitor wedge halfway through the gig & kick over my drink but I've actually missed all of that stuff so much."
To have all of these bands back together after so many years is also bringing a new energy to the festival according to Lindsay.
"Back in the 90s, we were all really competitive with each other, especially us & Grinspoon - even if they did whip our arses. These days though we're all good mates & enjoy having each other around. So I'm excited not to have that competitive energy around at a festival gig."
With such a nostalgic lineup anybody attending will know what they are in for, but there are still a couple of standouts.
"When you look at the lineup Caligula is kind of the standout band because they weren't really in that dirty guitar, cut-off army pants & flanno like the rest of us. Instead, they were a bit fancier & in the more pop vein, but they were still great musicians. So I'm stoked to see them play because I haven't seen them since way back then," said Lindsay. "Custard is another one. Any parents at these shows are going to think why is the dad from Bluey talking into the microphone? So I think a lot of parents are going to get a bit excited about that."
In closing, we asked Lindsay for his advice to aspiring radio hosts & musicians.
"I feel like anyone who wants to do radio should just record on their phone, get good at talking to people, asking questions & being interested in what people say.
"For musicians, there has never been a better time to be making music. Back when I joined Frenzal Rhomb in 1996 you had to wait for records to be in the shop to hear new music. These days the second that it gets uploaded you can immediately have it in your ears. That means two things; one it's easier than ever to get heard but it also means there is a lot of music out there, so it can be hard to stand out from the crowd."
