Lucy Burke explains the inspiration & meaning behind new single, Deaf Ears
Lucy Burke wrote to Pario ahead of the release of her new single, Deaf Ears, to detail the inspirations & meaning behind the piece.
When writing songs, I often imagine what it would be like to live in other people's shoes and see the world from a different perspective.
Inspired by the meltdown of Britney Spears and her recent censorship battle, the melancholy behind Marilyn Monroe's smile and the tragedy of Amy Winehouse, Deaf Ears takes a peep behind the curtain and imagines the trappings of fame. I imagine these iconic female singers standing in a crowded room screaming for understanding and all their pleas fall on deaf ears, because society now commodifies them. Whilst the song addresses these feelings of melancholy, it also celebrates the freedom of letting go of the pressure to be the best, all the time. It must feel exhilarating, taking ownership of your life and letting go of the expectations. So the song has elements of light and dark and has a wider message that we can all relate to - letting go of those internal and external expectations that hold us down.
I wanted to create a song that had jazzy and pop elements, reminiscent of yesteryear's classic female icons to honour these women who defy the odds and just wanted to be heard.
