Montana Sharp
When people think about pop music they often imagine a style of music that is rather surface-level or vapid. However, new pop sensation Montana Sharp believes that there is actually a lot more depth to pop music than perhaps people realise.
Speaking to Pario following the release of her second single, Power, Montana spoke about the varied influences behind her stunning music & videos.
As a young child, Montana quickly discovered her passion for music, thanks in large part to her father.
"My Dad was a really great piano player & I always wanted to be like him," Montana explained. "So I started classical piano lessons when I was 7 before I then started singing in my mid-teens."
Montana's father wasn't her only familial early music influence, as she says she also looked up to her older cousins. These strong family influences were then expanded upon when Montana began to develop her own "favourite singers" in the form of Alanis Morissette & Sia.
Alanis Morissette was actually such a strong influence on Montana that she wanted to be in the sat for the upcoming Alanis Morissette-inspired musical, Jagged Little Pill when she found out it was coming to Sydney. Unfortunately, that wouldn't come to be so Montana says she will have to settle for just seeing the show instead.
When Montana arrived on the scene with her debut single Greenhouse last year it was clear she had used both her musical influences & classical background to create a sound that was unique to her. When asked about her blending of classical with pop Montana was quick to say she believes the two genres are in fact "more closely linked than people think."
"I think there is a lot more of a classical undercurrent in pop than people realise. For me, I think that having the basis of a classical background really helped me from a songwriting perspective because I was never stuck searching for melodies or chords."
As a follow-up to Greenhouse Montana released her latest single, Power, which according to Montana was written rather quickly.
"I wrote Power because I actually had to finish a set but was missing one song. So I wrote it about how the dynamics of my romantic relationships & friendships were kind of repetitive."
With that theme in mind, Montana accompanied the single with a fantastical Queen Of Hearts-inspired music video.
"I actually worked with Majella Productions on my previous music video & loved how they went for a fantasy vibe... I actually had an Alice In Wonderland-themed 21st birthday party so this was definitely up my alley."
Looking ahead Montana says she wants to take her music in a new &very exciting direction after the release of her EP. "I want to go back to more of a classic rock & roll vibe. So I think my next EP/album is going to be a lot more playful."
