Moonsea

During the day singer-songwriter Moonsea is saving lives working as doctor in 1 of Australia's busy hospitals. At night though Moonsea follows another longstanding passion of hers as a musician, creating breath-taking music which blends her classical roots with modern pop elements.

Speaking to Pario during a momentary period of quiet in the hospital Moonsea told us about the challenges she has faced trying to balance being a doctor with being a musician. During our conversation we also spoke about how she developed the passion for music, her biggest musical influences, her debut single Lullabye, & finally how she came to choose the name Moonsea to perform under.

As a doctor Moonsea's schedule is already incredibly busy. Not only that but being a doctor is one of the most mentally & emotionally challenging jobs imaginable. So we had to wonder, why would Moonsea want add to these challenges by venturing into the world of music in any capacity beyond a simple hobby? In answer to this question Moonsea explained that she had a classical music background playing piano, violin & cello, but ultimately she wanted to pursue music to keep her brain active.

"I feel like it can be draining if your are focusing on just the one thing, so it's nice to have two separate things that you can divide your brain across."

Whilst there is a level of excitement & passion driving Moonsea's pursuit of music she says she wasn't aware just how challenging releasing music would be.

"Releasing this debut single professionally made me realise just how much work goes into it & made me respect everyone who does it that much more... So I'm definitely still learning & trying to navigate balancing the two sides of my life."

This balancing act doesn't stop at just her two careers. For Moonsea she also has to balance her classical background with her love for modern pop music.

"I had a bit of an unusual journey with music," explained Moonsea. "I started off very much in the classical world playing the piano, cello & violin. Also, my parents are from China & they didn't really listen to any popular western music, so it was more just the Chinese artists that they liked playing at home or in the car. Very slowly I started getting into contemporary pop music or pop-rock & growing up I really like The Proclaimers, Paramore & Taylor Swift. Then I started writing songs just because it was fun, but then I never stopped."

This unique hybrid style comes through very clearly in Moonsea's debut single, Lullabye. For this song Moonsea wove together symphonic elements & emotional pop songwriting because, "it's fun to combine elements of both worlds."

In regards to her stage name she chose that particular moniker as a nod to her Chinese heritage.

"The name Moonsea is inspired by my Chinese name, which is Hēi Míng," explained Moonsea, "Hēi meaning ocean & míng meaning bright, although we mostly use it when talking about moonlight."

Looking ahead Moonsea is planning to continue pursing both of her careers & hopefully squeezing in a few music gigs along the way. To do so Moonsea follows a motto that many artists subscribe to, "just because not many people have done it before doesn't mean it's impossible, so I'm going to go for it!"
