Morbius

Jared Leto

In the past few months comic book movie fans have been treated to an absolute feast of incredible output, thanks to the releases of Spider-Man: No Way Home and more recently The Batman. Unfortunately that run of fantastic films comes to s screeching halt with Sony's latest foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe via their Jared Leto led film, Morbius.

In Morbius we are introduced to biochemist Michael Morbius (Jared Leto) as he tries to cure himself of a rare blood disease. However, when his experiment goes wrong Morbius inadvertently infects himself with a form of vampirism and thus the Spider-Man villain is born.

Naturally with the film being built around a vampire Mobius eschews much of the comedic, light-hearted action fare viewers are typically treated to in comic film adaptations. Instead Morbius leans into the horror aesthetic, which it does well particularly from a cinematography standpoint. Unfortunately though the underlying story, pacing and CGI really fall short, leaving this film to be more style than substance.

On a storytelling level the film rushes through the story beats, meaning none of the emotional moments or character growth moments feel earned.

From a visual level the settings & cinematography are a treat but the CGI & editing are not even in the same ball park. The CGI style of vaporising Morbius to show rapid movement when combined with fast paced camera cuts make the film hard to distinguish & follow.

Following the six delays to the release of Morbius I went into this film with incredibly low expectations. Whilst the film wasn't egregiously bad and I did take some entertainment from my time watching this won't be a Marvel film I am clamouring to rewatch anytime soon.
