R.em.edy
Australian R&B has a new superstar to keep an eye on. Melbourne's R.em.edy has kick started 2022 with her incredibly personal single, Questions. But as Pario came to learn while speaking with her there is much more on the horizon.
During our conversation with R.em.edy (aka Emma) we spoke about her deep internal passion for music, her earliest musical influences, & the importance of highlighting women in the hip-hop & R&B realm.
Growing up Emma says her passion for music first developed thanks to her father's personally curated mixtapes & her own love for Hannah Montana - a love she still carries to this day.
"Music is my life but outside of that I am obsessed with pop culture, my tri-pod right now is literally a stack of Hannah Montana DVDs from my childhood," Emma told Pario. "Hannah Montana obviously really got me obsessed with the idea of being a pop star & being able to sing for people. But, I also remember listening to Tina Arena & Alicia Keys as a kid. My dad made me a mixtape to go to sleep with because I always had trouble going to sleep... dad continued to make mixtapes for me & my sister, which were kind of the So Fresh songs of the 2000s. When I discover people like Kesha, Taio Cruz & Justin Bieber everything changed - I was definitely a 'Belieber.'"
With this deep rooted passion Emma was determined to sing regardless of how she sounded.
"Passion wise I was there but talent wise I sounded like shit - but that didn't matter to me."
At 19 Emma decided it was time to dive head first into music & did so by taking vocal lessons, which she says has been "very liberating" & has allowed her to "find myself."
Throughout this period of personal & professional growth Emma continued writing incredibly personal music, which has ultimately culminated in her latest single, Questions. According to Emma this single is about "toxic relationships" & her own experience of "being accused of infidelity." With this song Emma says she hopes to help people "feel a little liberated by the song, even though it is quite petty."
The hope doesn't end with this song for Emma. Being involved in the hip-hop & R&B scene Emma has seen just how difficult it can be for women, so she hopes to be an inspiration for young girls to pursue their dreams.
"I really hope that I can liberate other women to chase their dreams & not give a fuck about what other people are going to say or think. Just trust yourself, trust your gut & have faith that it will all fall into place."
