Seance

The clique of popular girls is perhaps the most terrifying element of school life, but even more so when this clique is contained within an exclusive boarding school which may or may not be haunted. This is the foundational premise of Shudder's upcoming release, Seance.

In Seance we follow Camille Meadows as she embarks on her first days at a prestigious girls school. As is to be expected this new girl is not easily accepted by the popular clique and begins to form a fast rivalry. That is until the popular girls decide to invite Camille to a late night ritual seance as they attempt to make contact with the spirit of the schools fabled ghostly student. This is where the slasher element of this film takes over and true horror of the film begins to reveal itself to the world.

Echoing elements of Mean Girls and Scream the mystery deeps as we come to question who is behind the sporadic slayings of the teen girls. Is it the fabled ghost, the creepy but handsome maintenance guy, the new girl or perhaps even one of the girls within the popular clique.

Ultimately the film becomes long in the tooth as it lays out more and more options before culminating in a convoluted and clumsy climax.

Seance is enjoyable as a lazy weekend horror flick to kill time but fails to bring anything new the genre.
