Cori & Paige York - SULT

Sisters Cori & Paige York of Sult are hoping to use their music, & their latest single ICK, to change the way everybody looks at relationships, sex, sexuality, love, heartbreak & mental health. In order to get to this point in their careers the duo has used a little bit of friendly sibling rivalry to drive their passion forward.

Looking back on their earliest memories of music Cori told Pario that her passion began when she picked up her dad's guitar on a whim to mess around with. Although the passion initially began as a bit of fun Cori was obviously a highly talented artist & unlike most musicians it wasn't long before she began reaping the financial rewards for her talents. Something which then spurred her sister Paige to join Cori in the pursuit of music.

"I started off writing music by myself in my room but then Mum begun paying me $50 to play music for her & her friends," recalled Cori. "When Paige caught wind of that she got a little bit jealous so she started playing guitar & singing for mum's friends too."

According to Cori this sibling rivalry is the "foundation" of Sult & the relationship between her & Paige as bandmates.

"There's always a little bit of sibling rivalry but that keeps us going & keeps us both on our toes... Especially when we're playing live sometimes Paige gives me the side eye when I play the wrong note, not that I do that often but when I do oh my I hear about it." Cori explained candidly. "Paige challenges me to write better & play better. She really does bring out the best of me as a songwriter & hopefully I do the same for her."

In regards to their latest single ICK the inspiration came when Cori noticed her sister was experiencing a feeling she had herself experienced many times. That feeling was the dreaded "ick" when you are "suddenly repulsed by someone you are romantically involved with."

Speaking about the moment inspiration struck Cori recalls, "Paige & I have never had a great track record with dating, we have not dated well! I don't know if it's just bad luck, or maybe we're the problem, but every time we've dated somebody we've both gotten the ick... I remember looking at Paige 1 night & noticed she was so disinterested & obviously had the ick. I started playing the chords & singing the chorus to ICK & essentially wrote the song sitting across from Paige & her boyfriend at the time."

Given Cori said this wasn't the first time she or Paige had experienced the ick we had to ask about the strangest or funniest things that have given her the ick. With a giggle Cori then answered by saying, "I was dating a guy for a little while & he would lick his food before he ate it. I remember that being such a big problem for me because it just made me feel yuck. It was weird. He also had a little baby voice that he would do every now & then. Nobody likes baby voices, so that was an instant ick."

With ICK & many of their other songs touching on topics such as sex, sexuality, love, heartbreak & mental health Cori & Paige have had to be very open with one another. In closing our conversation Cori says they hope this openness is the biggest thing people, particularly girls, take away from their music & story.

"I think it's really really important to talk about sexual experiences... Obviously I wouldn't talk about this stuff with my dad but I feel like it should be a normal conversation to have. I find it so funny that men get to talk about sex like it's nothing but women don't really get to so I want to help break that barrier."
