The Black Phone
Melding supernatural thriller elements with the grounded terror of a child abducting murderer The Black Phone is a fresh & chilling entry into the horror realm.
Helmed by Director Scott Derrickson & based off a short story by Joe Hill the film adaptation of The Black Phone is set in blue-collar Denver during the 1970s. As a viewer we are immediately introduced to Finney (Mason Thames) & his sister Gwen (Madeleine McGraw) as they deal with school bullies & an abusive, alcoholic father. In the background the viewer is slowly brought up to speed on the recent news that young boys have been going missing on a consistent basis over recent months. It's not long later that our new friend Finney falls victim to 'The Grabber' (Ethan Hawke) & the supernatural elements come into play to ramp up the terror.
Ethan Hawke carves a terrifying path as The Grabber with his sinister mannerisms. However, Hawke's performance is not the standout performance in The Black Phone. That accolade falls to Madeleine McGraw brings a passion & believability to her foul-mouthed yet endearing character, who simply wants to be save her brother.
The supernatural element is never overplayed in The Black Phone, instead acting a chilling garnish to an already terrify tale of child abduction & murder.
The Black Phone is a fresh new take on horror which epitomises the saying, 'stranger danger'. Parents will undoubtably be watching their children just that little bit closer after viewing the film.
