The Continental: From The World Of John Wick
The John Wick universe kicked off with a story about a man & his dog, now we're venturing back to 1970s New York for a story about the franchise's iconic assassins hotel, The Continental. In this 3-part prequel series The Continental: From The World Of John Wick we'll discover the origins of the key figures within The Continental & how they came to control the hotel - all while further expanding the lore of this action-packed universe without being tied to its namesake, John Wick.
From the very first moment, The Continental: From The World Of John Wick captures the tone & vibe of the 4 prior films. This new series is filled with extreme violence, stunning cinematography, a heightened graphic novel presentation, mystery, intrigue, double-crosses & of course a wild story of vengeance.
On the presentation front, the comic influences are abundantly clear throughout. The comic book-style villain designs, in particular The Adjudicator (Katie McGrath) are visually striking & terrifying. Other notable character designs are the assassins Hansel (Mark Musashi) & Gretal (Marina Mazepa), & The Flock.
While The Continental: From The World Of John Wick is a tale with vengeance at its core the series presents the story in a different way to the films. Here viewers are presented with a story that has much more of a 1970s gangster/underworld war tone, with various warring factions littered throughout New York City.
At the centre of this story are Frankie (Ben Robson) & Winston (Colin Woodell), the latter of whom you may recognise as the proprietor of The Continental from the John Wick films. These 2 characters lead very different lives at the beginning of the series but a series of events drags them both into the danger & grime of the underworld as they face off with the hotel proprietor, Cormac (Mel Gibson). What then ensues is a deadly game of cat & mouse as multiple groups vie for control of The Continental.
Speaking of this deadly game, much like the previous John Wick films this series has a multitude of stunning shot action sequences & incredibly graphic, violent & gory murders. If you have a weak stomach be prepared to look at away at times - especially when a clothes iron, garbage disposal & cello appears on screen.
Overall The Continental: From The World Of John Wick perfectly captures the tone, action & presentation of the John Wick universe. Fans of this universe will delight in witnessing the world built out more with an entirely new story that isn't reliant on the one-man wrecking crew of Keanu Reeves as John Wick.
