Where The Crawdads Sing
Adapting a novel to film is always fraught with danger, with hardcore fans seemingly never satisfied. However, as someone who had never read Delia Owens book the film adaptation by Olivia Newman came across as a beautifully endearing tale.
Set in the marshlands of North Carolina in 1969 Where The Crawdads Sing is a simultaneous blending of a courtroom drama, romance & coming of age tale. Starring Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kya Clark, a young recluse who lives deep within the marsh after being abandoned by her family. When suddenly Kya is suddenly the first & only suspect in the murder of a young man she must convince everyone she is not some wild monster.
As Kya opens up to her lawyer we return to the start of Kya's life with an abusive father who drove all of the other members of her family to leave one by one. Where The Crawdads Sing then takes the viewer on a journey through Kya's life to give us some insight into how this young girl came to be in the situation she is currently confronted with. Along the way Kya grows as person, experiences love & heartbreak but despite all this remains a truly beautiful soul nature at heart.
Daisy-Edgar Jones is fantastic in the role of Kya. Edgar imbues the character with a gentle demeanour & an innocent wide-eyed wonder for the world around her, however she is also a strong willed & independent woman who refuses to be taken advantage of.
Where The Crawdads Sing is the type of film which my mum would absolutely adore. Throughout the film's 2 hour run time you'll experience a wide gamut of emotions, much like Kya, whilst also feeling the tension ramping up as the courtroom verdict approaches.
Where The Crawdads Sing is a beautiful adaptation which gives a unique twist to court room drama & romance.
