Chasing Static

A tiny Welsh town with a mysterious past finds itself at the centre of the retro psychological horror game, Chasing Static, from developer Headware Games & published by Ratalaika Games.

Playing as Chris Selwood, a Welsh man who has recently returned to North Wales following the passing of his father, we're quickly swept into a dark, psychological horror mystery. As we begin to explore this remote area Chis soon finds that the keys to solving the mystery will require him to dig into his father's past, the history of the region & deeply hidden memories.

To delve into the mystery the player will need to first locate a directional microphone & scanner (Frequency Displacement Monitoring Device) which will allow you to literally chase static. By following these sound clues you'll discover new locations, new memories & hidden objects.

Graphically Chasing Static is quite simplistic & polygonal, which rather than detracting from the experience though this design choice adds to the tension & terror.

The biggest downfall of Chasing Static is the storytelling itself. By presenting the story through a series of disconnected memory flashbacks it can become confusing. Particularly since these memories can be found in a random order as you explore.

Overall Chasing Static is a unique, tension fuelled experience with the occasional jump scare. Unfortunately, the story delivery lets the game down & takes away from the overall experience slightly. If you enjoy a simple "walking simulator" with puzzle-solving elements this game will appeal to you very well. Just beware you will literally be chasing shadows as you get lost in the darkness at times.
