AFI - Bodies

JAM Review Promo Template 2.jpg

The highly anticipated new album from AFI has finally arrived, and sadly it is a bit of a let down.

While you should never anticipate what you are going to get from AFI, given they are synonymous with unpredictability and breaking the mould, I had extremely high hopes for Bodies. The 11th studio album from the once again sees them breaking the shackles of their past but unlike past efforts takes them in a direction which perhaps would have been better left untraveled.

As always AFI are centred around the soaring and distinctive vocals of Davey Havok as they lean into a synth-heavy, 80s, new-wave punk style. Although promising at first, the record opens with perhaps it's best track Twisted Tongues, but quickly loses steam.

Twisted Tongues is a heavy, fast, exhilarating theatrical emo-punk effort. Later tracks unfortunately lean more into the synth-punk or pop side of AFI, which as a result sees them lacking that distinctive style fans have come to love.

Let's bury these bodies quickly so they are never found again.
