Often for people with creative passions, the most difficult challenge to overcome can simply be allowing yourself to be vulnerable. For Sydney-based DJ, singer, & podcast host Kate Fox this is a challenge she has found herself needing to overcome multiple times in her career.
Growing up music was always something Kate envisioned pursuing, albeit as a singer, not a DJ. So when the opportunity to pursue DJing arose she quickly got outside of her comfort zone & pursued that. Despite this Kate told Pario that she is now ready to challenge herself once again to pursue her first love, singing.
"I'm definitely in a safe space with DJing but I feel ready to get out of that comfort zone... At one point in time, DJing was very much outside of my comfort zone. So I've had a bit of time to adjust to that & now this is the next step. I just need to push through that last little barrier."
Perhaps surprisingly the past year with a COVID-induced break away from music actually helped Kate gear up for this transition.
"The break allowed me to write a lot of music & I was able to distance myself from the industry," explained Fox. "I needed that to get clear on what I want from music without comparing myself to everyone else... I've grown a lot with the break."
While the past year prevented Kate from performing as a DJ it didn't stop her from continuing to challenge herself. Over the past year, Kate launched the None To Give podcast which allowed her to be vulnerable & step outside her comfort zone once again.
"Starting the podcast was partly about exploring a different side of my personality & also an attempt to inspire people to see just how capable they are."
As a DJ/musician, the technical aspect of creating a podcast was not where Kate found the challenge. Rather it was the process of being very open & honest with her audience.
"The whole obstacle of stepping outside of my comfort zone again was a challenge," Kate explained. "On stage DJing, you don't have to speak your mind. Whereas in a podcast you are sharing your opinions, which is daunting."
As she now looks ahead with the country returning to some semblance of normality Kate says there are some big surprises on the horizon for her fans.
"There are a few things on the horizon which I don't think people will be expecting at all... Child me would be in awe of current me."
